Book Fair!

Our annual OES Book Fair sponsored and lovingly organized by FOESL is just around the corner.  Please come to the Upper School Library on Tuesday, November 13-November 15, to shop for books. The proceeds from this event support our OES libraries and make author visits and reading promotions possible for us.  In fact, our next author visit is coming up quickly on December 11th with the ever fabulous Eric Kimmel. Over the course of the day he will meet with students from Primary to 5th grade sharing his amazing gift of storytelling.

Library Happenings

Library classes are running smoothly.  This week, the magical "sixth" week, second graders will begin to check-out six books.  In third through fifth grades, we are investigating the dewey decimal system via an i-book created by Mrs. Ingham.  Our beginning school students have wrapped up a unit on friendship and will now listen to fall stories (apples, pumpkins and leaves, oh my!).  And, as always, we have lots of new books rolling in-including the ever popular 2013 Guinness Book of World Records.  Put it on hold today!

Summer Reading Challenge!

Bring us those forms filled with all the amazing books you read over the summer!  All forms are due by Friday, September 14th.  T-shirts will be arriving in about two weeks and will be distributed during regularly scheduled library classes.  If you have lost your form, you can also access one here.

We also would like to welcome Nicole Cormier who is assisting in the Library while Heidi Hackenjos is home enjoying time with her new baby, August.  Nicole will be with us through January.

Our First LS Library iBook

I had the wonderful chance, thanks to our awesome Tech department, to spend a week learning about iBooks Author.  I created a guide to the Dewey Decimal System which we will be using at the start of the school year with 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.  The book can be accessed via this link and will only be viewable on an iPad.  Take a look on your iPad if you have access to one!

It's Summer! Are You Reading?

Hope everyone is enjoying our sunshine and has read at least one, two, three or more good books by this point.  Don't forget to write them down for our reading challenge (due September 14th).  I just came back from a great library conference and will be adding some new titles to our Pinterest site.

Be on the look-out.  All the books will be available in our library at the start of the school year.

OES OBOB Team Wins State!

Congratulations, Milkshake Shooting Ninja Kiwis!  As the State Champions, our OES team beat out 18 other teams from all over the state this past Saturday in Salem.  They showed off their competitive reading skills with both grace, endurance and excellent sportsmanship.  Excellent job!

What an awesome visit with Peter Lerangis!  Our 3rd and 4th graders were captivated by Peter's humor and stories about his journey as an author.  He gave us the inside scoop about the creation of the 39 Clues series and inspired many to try the popular series.  Thanks to FOESL, Kim Bissell and the Children's Place bookshop for helping us create a successful visit.

Big congratulations are in order for our 4th grade OBOB team for making it to the state competition!  They rocked at regionals and will now be representing us on April 14th in Salem.

A Visit to Palau

Mrs. Ingham and Mr. Handel will be leading a group of 11 Upper School students to the island nation of Palau during OES Winterim.  We will help preserve the marine environment while learning about the culture and traditions of this amazing country.  Our buddy classes have helped gather books to share with an elementary school.  Thanks Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. King's classes for thinking of others!

Take a virtual visit to Palau.

Congratulations to Anna in 3rd grade for winning the $25 gift card to Powell's.  We will be offering a chance to win GOBS (Great OES Book Swap) money with another reading challenge just after Spring Break.  Don't forget to gather up your gently used books for GOBS.  It's a great way to get ready for summer reading.

and the OBOB winning team. . .

. . .is the Ninja Kiwis!  It was 4th grade team, the Ninja Kiwis, who won in a fierce battle which went into a lengthy tie-breaking round against the 5th grade team, the Dust Specks.   They will be representing OES at the regionals.  All teams should be proud of the work they did over the past months.  We have an amazing group of readers here at OES!

Monday, February 6, 2012

Tomorrow is the big day as we complete our OBOB OES competition.  16 amazing teams competed on Friday morning and we are down to the semi-finals tomorrow.  Check back to see which team will represent OES at the Regionals on March 17th.  All the teams did an incredible job reading, studying and synthesizing the 16 OBOB books.

A Resolution to Read

Happy 2012! To kick off the New Year, we are offering a reading challenge for our 2nd-5th graders.  Between January 9th and Valentine's Day, read 4 new-to-you books, fill out the form (available in the Library and also on our OES webpage), have your parents sign the form, bring it back to us, and enter your name in the drawing.  The winner will receive a $25 gift card to Powell's!

Our 4th and 5th graders are gearing up for the Oregon Battle of the Books.  Teams are being formed over the next week and students will begin to prep for the in-house OES battle tentatively scheduled for February 3rd, 2012.  The winning OES team will continue to the Regional Battle on Saturday, March 17th.  Check out the website link on the left for more information about the OBOB program.
