Book, books and books!

Hopefully everyone has had a chance to visit our OES book fair in the Upper School this week.  As we get closer to the holidays, I would like to share favorite books and links to help you get ready for the season whether by purchasing the books as gifts or to stock up via the public library (or us) for your own reading.

The New York Times just shared their "Best Illustrated List" and there are some gorgeous books on it.

Not a Failure!

Terrific visit with Stephan Pastis this morning who explained his path to comics and the creation of Timmy Failure with humor and wit.  Highlights included drawing the different characters for us and a comment about rejection.  He pointed out that even if you are not an immediate success regarding your interests and passions that early rejections and failures can be used to make you stronger and ultimately more successful.  Thanks to Children's Place Bookstore for making the visit possible.

Gearing Up for 2 (count 'em, 2) Author Visits

Next week will be a busy one for our 4th and 5th graders.  Monday morning, thanks to Children's Place, we will be amused and enlightened by a visit from Stephan Pastis.  We had several lucky winners of some choice Timmy Failure "swag" which they earned by completing a Timmy Failure quiz.

We also will have a virtual author visit with Thanhha Lai, author of the National Book Award winner,
Inside Out and Back Again on Thursday.  It is also a 2014 OBOB title as well and one of my favorite books within the past year.  Written in poetry form, it captures the story of Ha as she escapes from Vietnam with her family and experiences the challenge of being different in Alabama in 1975.

Library Update! Wow, it's a busy place!

Summer reading t-shirts and movie tickets are here!  If your child participated in our reading programs, they will receive either their t-shirt or tickets (or both!) during their regularly scheduled library class this week.  Movie ticket vouchers are for Valley Cinema and will expire December 31, 2013. Congratulations to our 115 participants in our traditional reading challenge and to the 20 readers who read books which later became movies, including many classics, and earned a movie ticket.

After two fantastic author visits within the past week, we now turn our attention to two upcoming visits-one on-campus and one virtual.  Stephan Pastis, author and illustrator of Timmy Failure: mistakes were made, will visit with 4th and 5th grade on October 21st.  4th and 5th graders will also be involved in a virtual author visit with Thanhha Lai on October 24th.  She is the author of the amazing book Inside Out and Back Again which was awarded the 2011 National Book Award for Young People's Literature and one of the two Newbery Honors.

Oregon Battle of the Books 2013

Congratulations to all of our 2013 OBOB participants!  What an amazing community of readers and thinkers we have.  The winning team was the "Benchwarmers" from Mrs. Williams 5th grade class.  They battled against  "the Night Ghants" from Mrs. Narramore's 4th grade class to win the final spot and will represent OES at the March 16 OBOB regional battle held here at OES.  This is the first year that all 4th and 5th graders participated in reading the 16 titles and we had over 40 battles in pursuit of determining the top team.  I am so proud of the work and effort all of our students put into this event.  They displayed team spirit, cooperation, dedication and leadership.
