National Poetry Month in the Lower School Library

We are celebrating National Poetry Month here in the Lower School Library in many different ways!  In addition to the usual display and exploration of fantastic poetry, students will receive their own short poem to keep and share with others (did you know April 30 is Poem in Your Pocket Day?).  Fourth graders in Mrs. Taylor’s class are creating their own poems on International Literacy Association’s Word Mover site.  Create your own poetry here!

5th Graders Share Their Love of Books

In celebration of School Library Month, and to help kick off next week’s first annual Lou Fernandez Literary Festival, fifth graders during their Library classes have been creating “book love” projects—book trailers, posters, and interactive presentations—to share out their favorite books with the OES community.  Highlights will be shared at this week’s Lower School assembly, and next week we will be sharing the book trailers here on the blog.

Book Ninjas in State Finals!

Our amazing 4th grade OBOB team, "The Book Ninjas", represented OES at State in Salem this past Saturday.  In an exceptionally close battle, they took 2nd place in the finals.  From class competitions onward they fought and won in over 30 battles. Thank you to Mrs. Sathyaraj and all the parents who helped coach and support our students in their reading pursuits. Congratulations to Maxwell, Leela, Jeremy, Jacob and Arun!

Writing Insights from Bestselling Author Brandon Mull

Build your imagination!  Brandon Mull, author of the Fablehaven, Beyonders, Five Kingdoms and Spirit Animals series, encouraged our 4th and 3rd graders to keep their imaginations active by observing the world around them and by reading.  He shared about his family, his journey as a writer, and tips on how to become an author.  He also showed the fantastic trailer for the Five Kingdoms series.  Thanks again to Powell's for connecting us to such amazing authors!
