It is with great honor and enthusiasm that we welcome writer, illustrator, and artist Patricia Polacco this Thursday, February 23rd to our Lower School! One of the most recognized and loved children's book authors, Ms. Polacco has written over 115 books and continues to bring her stories and art to the world. Her work and themes intersect beautifully with aspects of our Lower School curriculum: family stories, memoir, immigration and inclusivity.
Ms. Polacco brought treasures to share-her stories, a piece of the Meteor from "Meteor!" which each child touched to make a wish, and the Keeping Quilt from her family. She talked about her learning difference and how school was not always an easy place for her. My favorite words from her today were "We all have gifts-we just all open them at different times."
*Thanks to FOESL (Friends of the OES Libraries) who made this visit possible!

Six 4th grade teams battled each other this morning to determine who will represent OES at the Regional level. The two final teams were the "Book Browsers" from Rachel Taylor's class and "The Platinum Aardvarks Reading Cookies" from Asha Sathyaraj's class. "Platinum Aardvarks Reading Cookies" claimed the final victory and will be representing OES at the 3-5 Regionals on Saturday, March 11th. Congratulations to the 4th graders-all of whom exhibited great teamwork and reading spirit!

Ms. Beth's Kindergartners dove into their animal research with a stop at the Library this morning. We talked about how we keep all of our books about the same thing in one place to make it easy to find the books. And they learned where they can find animal books with true facts and photographs in our library. I can't wait to hear what they learn as they investigate all sorts of animals-hawks, gorillas, hamsters, elephants, chocolate labs, rhinos, wolves, tigers and lions.
